research

Kasten has been working in the neuropsychology department since the early 1990s on the development of PC programs for the rehabilitation of patients with brain damage (LernReha software), primarily with visual perception disorders ( hemianopia ). The visual field training he developed on the basis of the work of Ernst Pöppel , Josef Zihl and Fritz Schmielau led to international critical discussions about the plasticity of the visual system after lesions .

He also researches the psychological motives for body modifications (piercing, tattoo, scarification, branding, implant and others). His 2006 publication on body modification received significant media coverage. In this context, he is also working on a project on Body Integrity Identity Disorder ( BIID ): Those affected feel the hardly suppressible desire to have body parts amputated. He also conducts studies on non-psychotic forms of visual hallucinations such as Charles Bonnet Syndrome and the influence of music on perception and memory.

Kasten is currently working on somatopsychology , that is, physical illnesses as causes of mental disorders. In his book Somatopsychology , he criticizes the fact that the organic cause is often not adequately recognized by experts from the psychosocial subjects and that incorrect treatment occurs.
