Erich Koestermann

Erich Koestermann (born May 3, 1901 in Hanover , † September 25, 1973 in Kiel ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Koestermann studied at the Technical University of Hanover , at the Berlin University and at the University of Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1924. phil. received his doctorate . From 1929 to 1932 he worked as a research assistant at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae , where he perfected his command of the Latin language. He then completed his habilitation in 1932 at the Berlin University under Eduard Norden . In 1934 he received a teaching position at the University of Kiel , where he completed his habilitation in the same year. From the winter semester of 1934/1935 to the summer semester of 1935 he represented Felix Jacoby's chair , which had been forcibly retired by the Nazi regime.

After a substitute chair at the University of Bonn (1938) Koestermann was appointed adjunct professor in Kiel in 1941. In 1956 he was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor. He retired on September 30, 1966.

Erich Koestermann dealt with the history of the Roman Empire all his life . As one of the leading researchers on the historian and politician Tacitus , he published his writings in critical editions with commentary.
