Erich Merkel

Erich Merkel (born January 20, 1916 ) was a German football player. With the Planitzer SC he was represented in 1937 and 1939 in the final round of the Tschammer Cup. In 1948 he became Eastern Zone Master with SG Planitz .

Athletic career

At the age of 20, Erich Merkel appeared as a midfielder for the 1937/38 season for the first time in the squad of the Saxon Gauligist Planitzer SC. He was already involved in the two Planitz games in the Tschammerpokal in 1937 against Beuthen 09 (3-1) and VfB Stuttgart (0-2). In 1939, the Planitzer SC qualified again for the Tschammer Cup , but was eliminated in the first final round. Merkel was also there in the 2: 6 defeat against Hertha BSC . For the 1940/41 season he was no longer part of the Planitz squad. After the end of the Second World War , Erich Merkel joined the newly founded SG Planitz. With Merkel, the sports community qualified for the 1948 soccer east zone championship . The West Saxons advanced into the final and became the first soccer champions in the east zone with a 1-0 victory over SG Freiimfelde . The 32-year-old Erich Merkel was used as a right defender in the final. In the 1948/49 season, Merkel was still part of the eastern zone champions' squad, but then withdrew from top-class football.
