Erich Rottig
Erich Rottig (born April 10, 1888 in Prinzenthal (now Polish: Wilczak) near Bromberg ; † after 1945) was a German stonemason .
Life
Erich Rottig was the eldest son of the railroad locksmith Karl Rottig. After attending elementary school, he learned the stonemason trade from the Bydgoszcz master stonemason P. Albrecht from 1903 to 1907. He then did a three-year traineeship with the Berlin stone sculptor A. Dietrich. There, sculptures in marble such as portrait busts and figurative representations were made for Professors Fritz Schaper , Georg Kolbe and Richard Engelmann . In addition, Rottig was also active in building sculpture , u. a. at the German Opera House in Charlottenburg (destroyed in 1943) and the Royal Library Unter den Linden . Richard Engelmann then called him to Weimar , where he performed the colossal group The Sisters in Limestone at the art school there from November 1913 to February 1914 . When he returned to Berlin, he worked again for Dietrich and Kolbe.
In February 1915, Rottig was drafted into the military and served until February 1919. He then founded his own stone carving workshop in Danzig-Heubude . After 1945 Erich Rottig lived and worked in Greifswald .
