Erich Stather

Erich Stather (born September 18, 1948 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) from 1998 to 2009 .

In addition, he was chairman of the supervisory board of the German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the German Investment and Development Company (DEG) and the International Training and Development GmbH (InWEnt).

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1969, Stather went to the Bundeswehr until 1971 .

Between 1971 and 1978 he studied social sciences , history and law in Freiburg and Mainz. He completed his studies in 1978 with a master's degree in social sciences.

In 1979 Stather's political career began. Initially, he was personal advisor to the Mayor of Mainz at the time, Jockel Fuchs, until 1983 . This was followed by positions as personal advisor and press officer for the SPD parliamentary group in Rhineland-Palatinate (1983–1989), as press spokesman for the Hessian SPD parliamentary group (1989–1991) and as state secretary and spokesman for the Hessian state government (1991–1993).

From 1993 to 1998 Stather was self-employed.

From 1998 to 2009 he was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and at the same time chairman of the supervisory boards of various German development cooperation organizations . He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Federal Academy for Security Policy .

Stather has been a lecturer at the University of Mainz and the University of Worms since 2010. He is married and has three children.
