Erick Weinberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erick J. Weinberg (born August 29, 1947 in Ossining , New York ) is an American theoretical physicist who deals with quantum field theory and elementary particle physics.

Weinberg studied at Manhattan College (Bachelor 1968) and received his doctorate in 1973 with Sidney Coleman at Harvard University (Master’s degree 1969). He then worked at the Institute for Advanced Study from 1973 to 1975 . From 1975 he was assistant professor and from 1987 professor of physics at Columbia University . In 1978 he received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ).

He examined u. a. spontaneous break of symmetry with quantum fluctuations ( Coleman-Weinberg mechanism ) and solitons , both in quantum field theory . He also dealt with cosmology ( magnetic monopoles in the early universe, cosmological phase transitions , inflationary cosmology ) and black holes .

In 1988 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . He is one of the editors of Physical Review D .
