Erik A. Petschler (1914)

Erik Arthur Petschler (born September 2, 1881 in Gothenburg , † December 10, 1945 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish actor , director and screenwriter .

Today he is best known as the “discoverer” of the then 16-year-old Greta Garbo , whom he met in July 1922 and who helped her to her first role in the slapstick comedy Luffar-Petter .

Life

From 1913 Petschler appeared in small supporting roles in films by Victor Sjöström and Mauritz Stiller . Edmond Hansen discovered Petschler's comic talent and gave him major roles in the comedies Hämnden är ljuv , Hjälte mot sin vilja and Högsta vinsten . The success with the audience inspired Petschler to try his hand at his own film productions. In 1920 he directed the film Baron Olsson , in which he also played the leading role. The following year he directed Värmlänningarna , based on a model by Fredrik August Dahlgren , in which the Swedish Hollywood star Anna Q. Nilsson could also be seen.

After this success, Petschler founded his own production company Petschler-Film and wrote the script for the slapstick comedy Luffar-Petter . While preparing for the shooting, he met Greta Garbo, who at the time was still working as a saleswoman in the upscale Stockholm department store PUB . Garbo spoke to the actresses Tyra Ryman and Gucken Cederborg , who were accompanying Petter, and thus came into contact with Petter, who finally gave her her first role in Luffar-Petter .

Petschler remained active as a director until the 1930s. Few of his films survived. As an actor, he was seen repeatedly in smaller roles until his death in 1945.

From 1938 he was married to the screenwriter Ragnhild E. Ch. Broberg .
