Erik Hansen (canoeist)

Erik Rosendahl Hansen (born November 15, 1939 in Randers ; † September 29, 2014 ) was a Danish canoeist who won three Olympic medals.

Athletic career

Erik Hansen had reached the finals in a single kayak at the European Championships in 1959, both over 500 meters and over 1000 meters . At the 1960 Olympic Games on Lake Albano, he won both the preliminary and the intermediate run in a single kayak. In the final he won with a second advantage over the Hungarian Imre Szöllősi and the Swede Gert Fredriksson . The Danish 4 x 500 meter relay with Helmuth Sørensen , Arne Høyer , Erling Jessen and Erik Hansen reached third place an hour and a half later, behind the Germans and the Hungarians.

In 1961 Hansen won silver at the European Championships over 500 meters behind the Romanian Aurel Vernescu . Over 1000 meters he fought bronze behind the Swede Carl von Gerber and the Romanian Vasilie Nicoarǎ . Two years later Hansen received silver at the world championships over 500 meters behind Vernescu, over 1000 meters Hansen won over Vernescu. At the Olympic Games in 1964 , Hansen finished seventh over 1000 meters.

In 1965 Hansen won the European Championships over 1000 meters before the Hungarians Imre Kemecsey and Imre Szöllősi. In 1966 at the World Championships in East Berlin , Aurel Vernescu won over 500 meters and Oleksander Schaparenko from the Soviet Union over 1000 meters . Erik Hansen won the silver medal in both races. In 1967 Schaparenko also won over 1000 meters at the European Championships before Erik Hansen. At the 1968 Olympic Games , the Hungarian Mihály Hesz won ahead of Schaparenko and Hansen, after Hansen had won in the semifinals before Schaparenko and Hesz.

In 1969 Erik Hansen won silver at the European Championships over 10,000 meters behind Wiktor Zarjow from the Soviet Union. At the 1970 World Championships in Copenhagen, Zarow again won over 10,000 meters ahead of Hansen. At the end of his international career, Hansen finished seventh again at the 1972 Olympic Games .

The 1.82 m tall Erik Hansen from the Pagaj kayak club in Holstebro won a total of 37 national championship titles from 1958 to 1972. He later became a real estate agent.
