Oleksandr Maksymowytsch Schaparenko ( Ukrainian Олександр Максимович Шапаренко ; born February 16, 1946 in Stepanivka , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Soviet canoeist who was twice Olympic champion.

Career

Schaparenko belonged to the Avangard Sumy club and, in addition to his athletic career, completed a sports degree. In 1966 he won the title in a single kayak at the World Championships in East Berlin and, together with Jurij Stezenko, the title in a two- person kayak over 1000 meters each. In a four-man kayak, the Soviet four-man with Schaparenko, Stezenko, Volodymyr Morozov and Georgiy Karyuchin won the bronze medal. The following year Schaparenko won the title in the one over 1000 meters at the European Championships.

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, Schaparenko finished second behind the Hungarian Mihály Hesz in the single, just under a second behind . 35 minutes later he won together with Wolodymyr Morosow in a two-man with a second advantage over the Hungarians Csaba Giczy and István Timár .
