Bishop Erik Norman Svendsen

Erik Norman Svendsen (born January 27, 1941 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish clergyman. From 1992 to August 2009 he was Bishop of the Diocese of Copenhagen . Thus he took on a leading role in the Evangelical Lutheran national church of Denmark as primus inter pares (first among equals) to the other Danish bishops. From 2008 to March 31, 2018, he was also a confessionary ( confessor ) of the Danish royal family.

Career

Erik Norman Svendsen studied theology at the University of Copenhagen after graduating from high school in 1960. In 1968 he graduated as cand.theol. from. After his vicarage he taught religion and was pastor of the congregation in Brønshøj in the south of Copenhagen. In 1973 he moved to the parish in Skovlunde as a senior pastor . From 1980 to 1986 he was General Secretary of the organization for voluntary work in the People's Church, Kirkefondet . In 1986 he was elected provost of København Søndre Provsti , in 1992 as provost of Amagerland Provsti and in the same year Bishop of Copenhagen.

In May 2004 he married Crown Prince Frederik and Mary Donaldson in Copenhagen Cathedral , and he also baptized their children. On August 3rd, 2004 he was awarded the Nersornaat in silver. In 2006 Svendsen received the Dannebrog Order as first degree commander from the Danish Queen. Since 2008 he has been her personal pastor as a royal confessionary. On February 20, 2018, he presided over the funeral service for the late Prince Henrik of Denmark .

On October 9, 2008, he announced that he would give up the office of bishop in August 2009, two years before reaching the age limit for bishops. His successor was Peter Skov-Jakobsen . Until he retired, he assumed the position of assistant pastor in the Copenhagen garrison church .
