Erik Richter
Erik Richter (born December 19, 1889 in Berlin ; † February 3, 1981 in Plön ) was a German painter , graphic artist and chess composer .
Life
Richter was the son of a doctor, grew up in Berlin and initially studied natural sciences. In 1923 he married Anna Marie Volkmann, who also became known as a painter and graphic artist under the name Anni Richter. Both had 5 children. From 1948 the family lived in Plön.
Painter
After the First World War , Richter devoted himself entirely to painting. He and his wife drew animals in the Berlin zoo almost every day. After 1948 Richter founded in Plön together with Karl Storch the Elder. J. a private art school. Their students included Günter Haese , Jürgen Runge and Uwe Bangert .
Tournament player
Richter did not take part in tournaments, but he demonstrated his respectable skill level in free games with masters such as Richard Teichmann , Curt von Bardeleben and later Efim Bogoljubow . After 1945 he strengthened the team of the Wilmersdorf chess club .
From the 1950s he was a member of the Plön chess club. In 1950 and 1951 he won the Schleswig-Holstein state championship. From 1956 until his death he was a long-time top player in the Kiel Chess Society from 1884 .
In his studio on the Plöner Steinberg he often received guests, including Fritz Sämisch , Heinz Lehmann and Rudolf Teschner . They bit their teeth at the ingenious game of the professor of painting and admired his vitality, which remained unbroken even in old age.
Chess composition
Richter composed a number of chess problems; several miniatures in the style of the Bohemian School are known of him. He preferred the element of surprise, his role model being Sam Loyd . His compositions are characterized by originality and wit and never deny their origins in tournament practice.
