Erika (cherry)

Erika is a dark variety of sweet cherries belonging to the heart cherries . It is one of the main varieties in commercial cultivation .

origin

Erika was bred from the Rube and Stechmanns Bunte varieties by the Jork fruit growing research institute in 1954 and brought onto the market in 1976.

The fruit is medium-sized and evenly heart-shaped. The skin is half-ripe red and when fully ripe it is dark red, almost black. The medium-firm, juicy flesh is very tasty and aromatic, with a pronounced cherry aroma. The juice is very dark. The stone is small. The stem is of medium length, strong. It has a very high burst resistance and ripens in the 3rd to 4th cherry week .

The variety is self-sterile and needs a fertilization partner. Suitable Annabella , Kassins Early Bing Cherry , Alma , Bianca and Schneiders late cartilage cherry . 'Erika' is a regular bearing variety that is also suitable for kitchen gardens .
