Life

Erika Esop attended the English private college in Tallinn from 1935 to 1940 and then until 1946 the Tallinn commercial high school for girls, which since 1944 has been known as the "Technical College for Accounting and Planned Economics". After graduating, she learned various foreign languages (English, German, Finnish) at the Tallinn teachers' seminar, while at the same time she was already working as an accountant in a cooperative. In this profession she worked in various positions until 1983, after which she lived as a freelance writer in Tallinn.

Erika Esop had been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1988 .

Esop published her first children's poems in a magazine in 1961 and her first children's book that same year. In quick succession, the author published further volumes of poetry, which were soon followed by prose books. In them she brought the past of Estonia closer to the young readership, for example in the novel The Rich Girl (1995), which provides an “exciting story from the time of the first Estonian republic”.

In her novels for adults, too, political history is linked to family history, as one critic noted.
