Ira Lember

Ira Lember (until 1935, Ira Grünthal , 1935–1949 Ira Kivik , pseudonym shared with the author Erika Esop Artur Erich , born May 21, 1926 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian writer and children's book author .

Life

Lember attended the French Lyceum in Tallinn from 1933 to 1940 and the 4th high school in Tallinn during the German occupation of Estonia in World War II . After the war she worked as an auditor and warehouse manager. Later she made a further training at the commercial school (1957-1958), which she graduated as a goods expert. From 1944 to 1973 she worked in the consumer cooperative in Tallinn. Since 1974 she has lived as a freelance writer in Tallinn.

Ira Lember has been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1983 .

Lember made her debut poetry for children in 1962 and published her first book, Jannu , in 1969 , which contains short stories about a little boy. Other books for children and young people soon followed, some of which were made into very successful television series. In addition to the didactic elements, Lember's “humor and understanding for children” is particularly emphasized in the criticism. In her youth books, however, political and moral problems are also dealt with, for example, in Actor Against Will (1995) , the author describes the rescue of a Jewish boy during the German occupation of Estonia "emotionally rousing", and the witch hunt in schools (2011) addresses Sovietization Estonia 1940 from the perspective of a schoolgirl.

Didactic elements were also noted in Lember's prose for adults. Not least because of her popularity and enormous productivity, the author has been compared to Rosamunde Pilcher . A colleague saw parallels to Jaan Kross ' Wikmans Zöglingen (1988) in her novel Frühlingsromanze (2000), which describes the author's school days in the interwar period . However, other colleagues did not spare criticism; Jüri Ehlvest said that Lember could "almost not write at all."
