Erika Kaufmann

Erika Kaufmann (born January 28, 1925 in Graz ; † May 1, 2018 there ) was an Austrian journalist and from 1971 to 1991 the first woman to head the Musikverein für Steiermark .

Life

Erika Kaufmann was born in January 1925 in the Styrian capital Graz. After attending elementary and middle school (grammar school), she graduated from the Graz women's high school in 1943. Three years later she began studying music at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz and received her doctorate in December 1950. phil. From that year until 1961 she worked as a freelancer for the Graz daily newspaper Neue Zeit . In 1970, the year in which her husband, the philosopher and music researcher Harald Kaufmann died at the age of 42, she successfully applied as general secretary of the Musikverein für Steiermark, founded in 1815, and was the first woman in this position on January 1st, 1971. In her work as general secretary, she took care of the reorganization of the club's finances and was instrumental in separating the music club from the Steirischer Herbst . Furthermore, under her leadership, the application of soloist, chamber concerts and recitals was increased. In 1990, on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the Musikverein, Kaufmann was the editor of a festival program and another commemorative publication. In the same year she was named “ Citizen of the City of Graz ” by resolution of November 8, 1990 . After 20 years in office, Uta Werner took over the post of General Secretary in 1991 . In 1994 Erika Kaufmann handed over the estate of her husband, who had died 24 years earlier, and which she had kept and looked after up to this point, to the archive of the Akademie der Künste # Musikarchiv in Berlin . In 2010 she was made an honorary member of the Styrian Music Association, and the following year she was officially awarded the certificate. Erika Kaufmann died on May 1, 2018 in Graz.
