Erika Nagel , b. Geilhaupt (born August 10, 1920 , † March 28, 2007 in Wuppertal ) was a German painter .

Life

Erika Nagel was born in what is now Wuppertal; she later moved to Stuttgart with her husband. After her divorce, she returned to Wuppertal with her two sons.

It made a name for itself in the 1970s by decorating the walls of the Wupperufer in the Wuppertal city area with numerous animal and country motifs. First she painted the concrete base of the pillars of the suspension railway on Sonnborner Straße . Many citizens of Wuppertal enjoyed the colorful paintings. But massive criticism of the naive painting on the natural stone walls of the Wupper bank also led to a public discussion that divided the citizens into two camps. In February 1979, the incumbent Lord Mayor Gottfried Gurland sided with the painter who was present on the television program " Wednesdays in ... " on the West German Radio in the zoo rooms . He replied to the moderator Manfred Erdenberger's question about the legitimation of the Wupperufer painter: “ Of course, Erika Nagel can paint. "

Even during the broadcast, there was widespread support from the population. Afterwards, 150 kg of paint were donated to her for further paintings. This resulted in numerous pictures such as a blue whale a few meters long in Barmen , deer , hares and stags on Pestalozzistraße . On the Sonnborner Ufer in front of the stadium at the zoo , pictures of countries were created on the subjects of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Japan, France and Germany and the painting of Tuffi at the point in Unterbarmen where the elephant jumped from the suspension railway.

Many paintings on the banks of the Wupper were overgrown or faded by plants over time. From time to time, Nagel refreshed the pictures. She did this until her health no longer allowed it in 2001. Erika Nagel died on March 28, 2007 at the age of 86.

The band Striekspöen , who sings in the Wuppertal dialect, dedicated a song to her while she was still alive.

With the permission of Lord Mayor Peter Jung and then Andreas Mucke, von Nagel’s son refreshes the pictures from time to time.
