Eriodictyon is a genus of plants from the subfamily of the water leaf family (Hydrophylloideae) in the family of the predatory leaf family(Boraginaceae). Their distribution area is in the southwestern United States and neighboring areas in Mexico. Sometypes of Eriodictyon are used in Native American folk medicine. The scientific name is derived from the Greek words ἔριον erion "wool" and δίκτυον diktyon " safety net", which refers to the thickly matted hair on the underside of the leaf. As for many other plant species, the Spanish common name Yerba Santa is "sacred plant".
description
Eriodictyon species are evergreen, branching, sturdy shrubs . The parts of the plant are hairless to woolly or hairy with glands. The alternate leaves are thick, stalked or sessile with a smooth or serrated leaf margin.
Many flowers stand together in terminal, branched inflorescences . The hermaphrodite flowers are five-fold with a double perianth . The unequal sepals are only fused at their base. The violet to purple or white petals are fused to tube-shaped and usually longer than the sepals. The stamens do not rise above the crown. The stamens arise at the base of the corolla tube. Two carpels have become a top permanent ovary grown. There are two to four ovules in each ovary chamber .
The split fruits disintegrate into four dark brown to black, egg-shaped, angular to more or less winged nuts.
distribution
Most species are found in the southwestern United States and neighboring areas in Mexico. A larger area is populated by Eriodictyon angustifolium , which extends to the northeast of the USA.
