The water leaf family (Hydrophylloideae) are a subfamily of the predatory leaf family (Boraginaceae) within the flowering plants (Magnoliopsida). There are 17 genera and about 225 (up to 300) species in this subfamily. The name of the subfamily is derived from the fact that the leaves of some species are translucent "watery".

The subfamily has its natural distribution in all parts of the world, except in Antarctica and Europe .

description

The types of the subfamily are annual and perennial herbaceous plants or subshrubs . The plants are mostly hairy. The leaves are mostly alternate, rarely opposite. Usually they are hairy and glandular. They can be simple or compound. Stipules are missing.

The flowers are often single in zymose or paniculate inflorescences . The hermaphroditic, radial symmetry flowers are usually five-fold. The five sepals are mostly fused at their base; they grow to the point of fruit ripeness and are usually still present on the fruit. The five petals are often blue to purple. Usually there is only one circle with five stamens . In many species the stamens have a pair of small appendages at the base of the stamens . These protect the nectaries . Two carpels are a mostly upper constant ovary grown. The one or two styluses end in a cephalic scar. Pollination is accomplished by Hymenoptera (Hymenoptera) ( Entomophilie ).

Double capsule fruits are formed.

Systematics

To the subfamily include some garden ornamentals , such as the grove Flower ( Nemophila ) and phacelia .

The following 17 to 20 genera belong to the subfamily of the water leaf family (Hydrophylloideae):

Taxa of the earlier families: Ellisiaceae, Eutocaceae, Hydrophyllaceae, Sagoneaceae now belong to this subfamily.
