Eriosyce esmeraldana is a species of plant in the genus Eriosyce from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species goes back to the place where the plant was found, the Chilean town of Esmeralda .

description

Eriosyce esmeraldana grows as a geophyte with a long, conical taproot. The flattened plant body sometimes forms lateral shoots at the base, is dark green to reddish brown in color and reaches a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters. The 13 to 22 ribs are completely dissolved in cusps . The thin and needle-like thorns sit in groups of 5 to 7 on the areoles and are 0.3 to 0.5 centimeters long. The funnel-shaped flowers only appear on the young areoles and are yellow to reddish in color. They are 2 to 3 inches long and wide. The pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with thick wool and black bristles.

The egg-shaped, thin-walled fruits are dry and open at a basal pore.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Eriosyce esmeraldana is distributed near the coast in northern Chile, south of Antofagasta to north of the Atacama Desert .

It was first described as Chileorebutia esmeraldana in 1963 by Friedrich Ritter . However, this name was incorrect under ICBN Article 11.4. In the same year Curt Backeberg combined the plant to Neochilenia esmeraldana . In 1966 John Donald Donald and Gordon Douglas Rowley added the plant to the genus Neoporteria , and in 1980 Ritter combined the species to Thelocephala . In 1994, Fred Kattermann made the current recombination to Eriosyce esmeraldana .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
