Eriosyce kunzei is a species of plant in the genus Eriosyce from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species honors the German doctor and botanist Gustav Kunze .
description
Eriosyce kunzei has green, somewhat flattened spherical to elongated plant bodies that reach a height of 10 to 20 centimeters and a diameter of 13 to 14 centimeters. The sunken part is not covered with thorns . The 16 to 20 blunt ribs are thickened around the long and narrow, 13 to 17 millimeters apart areoles and notched with bumps. The humps are confluent and pointed. The yellowish and later graying thorns are curved upwards to inwards. The 2 to 4 thick central spines are 4.5 to 5 inches long. The 10 to 12 straight radial spines are directed downwards. They are 1.3 to 4.5 inches long, with the top thorns being the longest.
The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are up to 3.5 inches long and wide. Their flower tube is woolly white and has some black bristles. The oil-green pericarpel is covered with brownish reddish scales. The sepals are ivory white and have a reddish central stripe. The elongated, shiny yellowish petals are serrated with a tip. The stamens are white, the stylus is flesh-colored, and the scar somewhat lighter.
The egg-shaped, fleshy fruits are hollow and up to 2 inches long.
Distribution and systematics
Eriosyce kunzei is found in Chile in the south of the Atacama region and in the north of the Coquimbo region in the mountains on both sides of the river valleys of the Río Elqui and Río Huasco .
The first description as Echinocactus kunzei was published in 1846 by Carl Friedrich Förster . Fred Kattermann placed them in the genus Eriosyce in 1994 . There are two varieties:
- Eriosyce kunzei var. Kunzei (very thin and needle-like thorns)
- Eriosyce kunzei var. Transitensis (thorns much thicker)
Synonyms are Neoporteria kunzei , Phyrrocactus kunzei , Chilenia kunzei , Hildmannia kunzei and Neochilenia kunzei .
