The Erkenbert Museum in Frankenthal , Rhineland-Palatinate , is a city history museum that is also dedicated to the local cultural and art history. The exhibits include grave finds from around 500 AD to locally manufactured industrial products of the 20th century.

designation

The name of the museum goes back to Erkenbert , actually Eckenbert (around 1079–1132) from Worms, who founded the Augustinian Canons' Monastery in Frankenthal in 1119 , the structurally preserved fragments of which are now known as the Erkenbert ruins .

history

In 1893 the "Altertumsverein Frankenthal" founded in the previous year established the Erkenbert Museum in the former granary of the Augustinian Canons' Monastery. Between 1910 and 1914 it moved into the immediate vicinity of a large council chamber on an upper floor of the ruin. These parts of the ruins were completely destroyed during the air war in 1943, and the remains of the museum were removed in 1960.

The antiquity association and the city administration agreed in 1986 to run the museum together in the future. This resulted in a new location in the former Stadtsparkasse building on Rathausplatz, which was renovated from 1988 and opened in 1990.

Permanent exhibition

The permanent exhibition of the Erkenbert Museum leads through around 1500 years of art and cultural history of the former fortress and garrison town of Frankenthal, which has been dubbed the “Third Capital of Electoral Palatinate ”. Events and guided tours are also offered, including for children and young people and school groups.

Valuables

The valuable exhibits include paintings by Frankenthal landscape painters Gillis van Coninxloo or Anton Mirou from around 1600 as well as Frankenthal porcelain from the second half of the 18th century, which was used at European royal courts.
