The Church of the Redeemer ( listen ? / I ) is the evangelical community church in Cologne district Rodenkirchen . Audio file / audio sample

history

The predecessor of today's church is the still existing Ernst-Moritz-Arndt parish hall. This building complex including the bell bearer was built in 1934/35 and includes the church on the upper floor, which is used today as a community hall.

With the inauguration of the church in 1967 by the architects Sauerzapf / Nathow from Solingen , the growing community was given a suitable place of worship.

The Ernst-Moritz-Arndt parish hall has been completely renovated and modernized in two construction phases for several years.

Architecture and equipment

The overall picture is shaped by the 20 meter high campanile , the floor plan of which is made up of two interlocking Ls. The flat roof sits just above the sound openings of the bell chamber, which are present on both sides. The narrow sides of the tower are open from bottom to top. The eastern edge of the tower is crowned by the tower cross, which is provided with stylized thorns and carried by a ship on waves; it is reflected in the design of the altar cross.

Two batiks made by Margot Raumer in 1982 were hung on the walls of the altar area . The smaller batik on the left shows creation , the right one redemption .

Down the stairs is the small church square, which connects to the actual church space. Its floor plan follows the concept of an angled church . The two wings of the church are arranged at right angles to each other and intersect in the altar area. To the right of the altar area, on the north wall, is the slightly raised singing and organ gallery.

The number of seats can be expanded from 300 to 600.

organ

The mechanical organ by the Cologne organ builder Willi Peter has been in the organ loft since 1982, with 23 stops on two manuals ( main unit and swell unit ) and pedal . The striking, multi-segmented organ front made of black-glazed wood , which was specially designed by the architect Wolfgang Sauerzapf, is characteristic.

Bells

Bell bearer at the parish hall
Full bells of the Church of the Redeemer

In the bell carrier of the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt parish hall hangs a small bronze bell from the Rincker ( Sinn ) bell foundry from 1934 and bears the inscription “Come to me all” . It cannot be rung due to a broken rope. It was the bell that once rang for services in today's parish hall. There is a prospect of installing an electrical bell system for this bell so that it can be rung again as the fourth bell after around 40 years.

Since December 1971, three bronze bells from the same bell foundry have been ringing from the bell chamber of the Campanile. All bells are decorated with the anchor cross - alluding to the tower cross and the cross above the altar - and hang on straight steel yokes in the steel bell cage. In the Läuteordnung the famous Rhineland is Beiern revived. The bells rang for the first time at Christmas Vesper 1971.

The big bell (bell 1) rings for funeral services and as a funeral bell for burial in the central cemetery (morning / noon) as well as on Good Friday both for worship and at 3 p.m. After every Sunday and holiday service, she rings the bell (the bell rings on holidays and during the festival times). The middle bell (bell 2) reminds us to pray for peace and prayer at noon and at 6pm in the evening. In the church service it is rung during the Our Father's Prayer in order to give those who are unable to attend the service a sign to participate in prayer at the same time. The small bell (bell 3) sounds at separate baptismal services and reminds of the baptism in the morning at 8:00 a.m. (on Saturdays, taking into account nearby residents, only at 9:00 a.m.). The bell rings ten minutes before Sunday and public holiday services. In order to represent the penitential character, the small bell is missing on Passion-time Sundays and the middle bell is missing on Advent . Sundays and public holidays are rung in the evening before at 5:50 p.m. with the same bell that is used for the service.
