history

Welcome sign for the Counts von Bentzel-Sturmfeder-Horneck

The Thurn Castle (old German name for the tower ) was first mentioned in 1422. The origin of today's baroque palace complex was a fortified residential tower surrounded by several moats .

In 1747, the Bamberg cathedral capitular Lothar Franz Horneck von Weinheim acquired the estate and began converting the former knight's castle into a baroque pleasure palace. First wings were added to the gate (1754) and the older buildings on the east side of the site were unified. At that time the southern front received its magnificent facade. Shortly afterwards the farm buildings and in 1766 the playful rococo pavilion were built.

The park opened in 1975. The current owner of Thurn Castle, Benedikt Graf von Bentzel-Sturmfeder-Horneck , continues to run the castle park, which was transformed into an adventure park by his father Hanfried Graf von Bentzel-Sturmfeder-Horneck. The palace, including the chapel and the baroque garden pavilion, designed by Johann Jakob Michael Küchel, a student of Balthasar Neumann, is privately owned.

Castle Park

The amusement park is located in a castle park with old trees, including a 400-year-old oak and several ginkgo trees . When expanding the park, attention is paid to the protection of plants and animals. Over 300 bats live in the attic of the castle . The Bavarian Bat Center , which provides information about the animals, was opened in the entrance area of the park in 2015 with the support of the Upper Franconian Foundation , the Bavarian Nature Conservation Fund and the Heroldsbach community . You can stay overnight in the Thurn Remise in the castle.
