Nominations for the episcopate

In 2002 Pettersen ran for the first time for the highest office in the Diocese of Tunsberg , and in 2004 he applied for the Diocese of Oslo . However, the successful competitor Ole Christian Kvarme was unusually not appointed unanimously by the government. The ministers Per-Kristian Foss ( cons. ) And Odd Einar Dørum ( lib. ) Voted for Pettersen. Dørum argued that Pettersen represented the diversity of the city of Oslo and stood for the willingness to include homosexuals in all areas of church life.

On June 19, 2009, Pettersen was appointed Bishop of Stavanger by the government, although his competitor Kjetil Aano had a clear majority in the Bishops' Conference and Council of Churches. Pettersen's positive attitude towards homosexuality in the church had no meaning, said Minister of Culture and Church Trond Giske later on record.

On November 8, 2009 Pettersen was installed in the Stavanger Domkirke in his office. He retired on March 1, 2017.
