Renovated warehouse from the opposite bank of the Elbe

The Erlweinspeicher is a former large warehouse near the historic city center of Dresden . The building is one of the city's architectural landmarks. It is directly related to the Semperoper , Zwinger and Brühlscher Terrasse .

history

As a relic of the industrial era, the warehouse located between the state parliament and the congress center is the oldest building in the Neue Terrasse ensemble .

The Erlweinspeicher was built in 1913 and 1914 as a municipal warehouse for the storage of tobacco, wool, spices and fabrics by the Dresden city planning officer Hans Erlwein , after whom it has only recently been named. Since it is visible from afar in the immediate vicinity of the city center, Erlwein tried to soften the effect of the large building mass through the shape of typical baroque town houses and the small-scale roof landscape in the cityscape. The building was named after the modular principle in just fifteen months as reinforced concrete - skeleton built and offered a floor space of about 19,800 square meters with a width of 36 meters, 76 meters in length and a height to the ridge of around 39.50 meters.

The Erlweinspeicher was still in use until 1991, even though the building fabric on the upper floors was badly damaged by leaky roofs and windows. Usage considerations of the 1990s, e.g. B. failed as a new location for the state library because the Free State of Saxony was not prepared to forego its concept of merging the state library and the library of the TU Dresden and other universities in Dresden. After the construction of the new SLUB building and the decision to build the new congress center on the Neue Terrasse, the use of the hotel was examined more closely.

From November 2004 to May 2006, the vacant memory by HOCHTIEF Solutions AG Berlin branch in one was Congress - Hotel of the " upper middle class " for the Maritim remodeled group which also the neighboring convention center operates with which it is connected. During the renovation, the interior of the listed building was gutted to create space for an atrium that extends through all floors . The opening ceremony took place on May 15, 2006. The 45th Maritim Hotel has 328 rooms, 40 of which are suites.
