Erna quail

Erna Wachtel (* 3. April 1907 in Ratibor , Upper Silesia ; † 1. June 1995 in Chicago , Illinois ) was a German American gymnast , coach and nonfiction author .

Life

She learned gymnastics as a teenager in the gymnastics club Eiche Ratibor (TV Eiche Ratibor) . In 1926 she emigrated to the United States , arrived in Chicago and became one of the first to establish, promote and develop the sport of apparatus gymnastics. Her experience and skills from Upper Silesia helped her win numerous local and regional prizes and awards at the Amateur Athletic Union . In 1941 and 1942 she won silver at the championships of the Amateur Athletic Union and was one of the best gymnasts for years. She then worked as an instructor, referee and trainer. She was the coach of the United States women's team and led her to 9th place in apparatus gymnastics at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne . She then devoted herself to the dissemination of girls' and women's gymnastics , organized events and performances, and was co-author of three relevant guides. From 1957–1973 she taught physical education at Lake Shore Park in the Chicago Park District and worked for several years as a lecturer in gymnastics at the University of Illinois on the Chicago campus .

In memory of her, the Erna Wachtel Memorial Scholarship is awarded to young gymnasts.
