Ernst-Charles Lasègue

Ernest-Charles Lasègue , also (Ernest) Charles Lasègue (born September 5, 1816 in Paris , † March 20, 1883 ibid), was a French internist , neurologist, epidemiologist and medical historian.

The Lasègue sign is named after Lasègue in medicine . The term “ folie à deux ”, which is still used in psychiatry today for an induced psychosis, also comes from him. Around 1873, at the same time as the Englishman William Gull  (1868), he first described the eating disorder now known as anorexia nervosa as "anorexia hysterica". Both emphasized the psychogenesis of the disease.

Life

Lasègue studied in Paris and was Claude Bernard's roommate there . Lasègue had initially started studying philosophy . When he heard a lecture by Armand Trousseau (1801-1867), he turned to clinical medicine and later became Trousseau's favorite student and close associate. He enrolled at the Medical Faculty in 1839 and received his doctorate in Paris in 1847 with a thesis on Georg Ernst Stahl . On behalf of the French government, he went to southern Russia in 1848 to investigate the rampant cholera epidemic there. Lasègue was a doctor at the Salpêtrière , Pitié and Necker hospitals .

He gave lectures on diseases of the brain and nerves and in 1869 he became professor of clinical medicine at Necker Hospital . He kept this position until his death. Because, in Lasègue's view, the disease of the cell was only a part of the pathology, he criticized Virchow's cellular pathology .
