Ernest Bovet (born May 24, 1870 in Lausanne ; † August 25, 1941 there ) was a Swiss Romance scholar and intellectual .

life and work

Bovet studied Romance studies in Zurich and received his doctorate in 1895 under Heinrich Morf on the sonnets of Giuseppe Gioachino Belli . He taught French literature in Rome and worked for the magazines Semaine littéraire and Bibliothèque universelle . From 1901 to 1922, he succeeded Heinrich Morf as a full professor of French and Italian literary history in Zurich . From 1907 to 1923 he founded and directed the Zurich magazine Wissen und Leben . From 1912 to 1918 he was President of the Swiss Homeland Security and from 1922 to 1939 General Secretary of the Swiss Association for the League of Nations.
