Ernest Francis Acheson (born September 19, 1855 in Washington , Pennsylvania , †  May 16, 1917 there ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1909 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ernest Acheson attended the public schools in his home country and Washington & Jefferson College , which he graduated from in 1875. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1877, he worked in this profession until 1879. Then he worked in the newspaper business. He acquired the Washington Weekly Observer , which he published himself. In 1889 he turned this weekly newspaper into a daily newspaper. In January 1893 he became president of the Pennsylvania Editorial Association and in June of that year he became secretary of the relevant federal association. From 1894 to 1917 he was a curator at Washington & Jefferson College .

Politically, Acheson joined the Republican Party . In 1884 and 1896 he took part as a delegate at the respective Republican National Conventions . In the congressional elections of 1894 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat William Allen Sipe on March 4, 1895 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1909 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell .

In 1908 Acheson was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he continued to work in the newspaper business. In 1912 he retired. He died on May 16, 1917 in his hometown of Washington, where he was also buried.
