Ernest H. Volwiler

Ernest H. Volwiler (born August 22, 1893 in Hamilton (Ohio) , † October 3, 1992 ) was an American pharmacologist at Abbott Laboratories , known for the development of thiopental with Donalee L. Tabern (1900–1974).

Volwiler studied chemistry at Miami University in Oxford , Ohio, (bachelor's degree 1914) and at the University of Illinois , where he received his doctorate under Roger Adams . He spent his entire career at Abbott Laboratories, becoming its CEO in 1950 and Chairman of the Board in 1958.

He is known for developing two blockbuster drugs, the sleeping pills Nembutal and Pentothal (thiopental). During the Second World War, he was responsible for the commercialization of sulfonamides and antibiotics (penicillin) by Abbott.

He was known as a philanthropist. He received numerous honorary doctorates.

In 1955 he received the IRI Medal , in 1958 the Priestley Medal and in 1960 the gold medal of the American Institute of Chemists .
