Ernest Marneffe
Ernest François Adelin Marneffe (born April 15, 1866 in Liège ; † September 16, 1920 ibid) was a Belgian painter and etcher of portraits of women.
Marneffe studied painting in Liège at the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Liège with Adrien De Witte .
After graduating, he worked as a painter of portraits of women in Liège. He shared a studio with his fellow student François Maréchal.
He spent several years in Paris, where he met Félicien Rops and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes , who influenced him.
Then he was appointed professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Liège. The artist, who died prematurely, was ahead of his time with his style. His genre pictures, nudes and portraits of women belonged to the world of the 1930s. His pictures were characterized by a sensuality, which earned him the reputation of a scandalous painter.
