Ernest Truex (born September 19, 1889 in Kansas City , Missouri , † June 26, 1973 in Fallbrook , California ) was an American actor in theater, film and television.

life and career

Ernest Truex had a long and successful career on New York Broadway . In the period from 1913 to 1966, Truex appeared in a total of over 130 film and television productions. He became known both on stage and in film for portraying long-suffering, oppressed or fearful men for comedic purposes. Around 1940 he stood in front of the camera for a number of screwball comedies , for example as the neurotic reporter Roy Besinger in His Girl for Special Cases (1940) alongside Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell and as CEO of Preston Sturges in Christmas in July (1940) at the side ofDick Powell . In the 1950s he took on recurring roles in some US television series.

Ernest Truex was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the television category in 1960 . He was married three times, most recently to actress Sylvia Field from 1937 until his death , and had three sons. His eldest son Philip Truex (1911-2008) was also an actor and was seen as the dead title character in the Hitchcock film Always Trouble with Harry (1955).
