Ernesto Maserati (born August 4, 1898 in Voghera , † December 1, 1975 in Bologna ) was an Italian racing driver , engineer and entrepreneur .

Life

Ernesto Maserati was born in Voghera in Lombardy in 1898 as the youngest of seven brothers . His father was a train driver .

On December 1, 1914, together with his brothers Alfieri and Ettore , he founded the car manufacturer Maserati in Bologna . During the First World War , Ernesto Maserati ran the company because his brothers were on the front lines .

Maserati began his racing career in 1924. In 1927 and 1930 he won the Italian driver championship behind the wheel of a Maserati Tipo 26 . In 1931 he won the Gran Premio di Roma on the Pista del Littorio in a Maserati V4 as well as the Grand Prix of Tunisia in Carthage in the Voiturette class.

After the death of his brother Alfieri in 1932, Ernesto Maserati became General Manager and Chief Engineer of Maserati. He designed the racing cars and was also the company's only works racing driver during this period .

In 1937, as a result of financial difficulties, the Maserati brothers had to sell their business to a group of investors led by Adolfo Orsi and, as part of the purchase agreement, bind themselves to the company for ten years. During the Second World War , Ernesto Maserati was involved in the development of the Maserati A6 . In 1947 he left the company and, together with his brothers Ettore and Bindo, founded the automobile manufacturer Officine Specializzata Costruzioni Automobili (OSCA).

Ernesto Maserati died in Bologna in 1975 at the age of 76.
