Ernest James "Ernie" Bond (born May 4, 1929 in Preston ) is a former English football player . As a left winger, he won the English championship with Manchester United in 1952 . Directly afterwards he was active for seven years for Carlisle United , which played in the third and from 1958 in the fourth division.

Athletic career

Bond was initially active in amateur football for Leyland Motors before signing a professional contract with Manchester United in December 1950 . The debut for the first division club followed on August 18, 1951 in a 3: 3 against West Bromwich Albion . Less than two months later, he contributed his first own goal to the 5-2 win against Aston Villa . By the end of the 1951/52 season he got four hits in 20 league games and Bond was an integral part of a striker row with Jack Rowley , John Downie and Stan Pearson as a left winger . The success was quickly ephemeral and after only one goalless draw against Arsenal at the beginning of the 1952/53 season, Bond moved on to third division Carlisle United in September 1952 .

Bond played in the third division for six years. He was characterized by a high level of consistency in his performances and his teammates on the offensive included Alan Ashman , Jimmy Whitehouse and Billy Hogan , as well as Geoff Twentyman in the middle of defense , who moved to Liverpool in 1953 . After the end of the 1957/58 season , Bond rose with Carlisle in the newly founded Fourth Division . There he completed nine more games in the 1958/59 season before he left the club. During his time at Carlisle, Bond had scored 27 goals in 206 competitive games. The last known station was the Queen of the South club in Dumfries, Scotland .
