Theater building

The Ernst-Barlach-Theater is a theater at Franz-Parr-Platz 8 in the city of Güstrow in Mecklenburg .

history

The theater is the oldest surviving theater building in Mecklenburg. On the initiative of Friedrich Piper and Carl Daniel Lönnies, Georg Adolph Demmler was able to build the building in 1828 with additional donations from the citizens of Güstrow . The city of Güstrow provided the building site and materials for the building project free of charge. In return, as agreed, ownership of the theater passed to the city after construction. The theater building was inaugurated on October 12, 1828 with a performance by the “Grand Ducal Court Theater” (today Mecklenburg State Theater ) from Schwerin .

From 1839 to 1853 there was a permanent connection to the Rostock theater before the premises were used as barracks from 1886 to 1888 . In the years that followed, the building was used as a theater again and played by a small, constantly changing ensemble of young actors. In 1912/13 Hans Albers could also be seen in Güstrow, who also worked there as a stage assistant and mainly played the roles of young lovers.

In 1921 the Low German amateur theater “Güstrower Volks- und Heimatspiele” was founded, but in 1923/24 the theater was converted into a cinema . In the mid-1920s, the theater was again a branch of the Rostock City Theater until it was closed in 1931 during the Great Depression. In 1933 the theater was revitalized and the management of the Güstrow theater was transferred to the "Low German Stage". After the establishment of a "Mecklenburgische Landesbühne" based in Güstrow in 1938, there were four to five performances per month until the theater was completely closed on September 1, 1944. At the end of the war, the premises were needed for war refugees.

After the end of the war , the Güstrower Theater was the first to resume theater operations in Northern Germany. Former actors and employees initiated the founding of their own ensemble. In the following years, up to 175 members managed to run a three-section theater, which was supported by the "Niederdeutsche Bühne Güstrow".

From 1955 to 1957, the stage building, the auditorium and the restoration of the historical facade were carried out, while the operation continued in parts, until it was officially reopened on September 1, 1957. By decision of the city council it was given the new name " Ernst-Barlach -Theater".

Since January 1, 1976, the theater has been a pure guest theater sponsored by the district.
