Ernst-Günter Afting

Ernst-Günter Afting (born August 9, 1942 in Osnabrück ) is a German biochemist.

Afting was born as the son of the farmer August Afting and his wife Dorothea (née Wellmann). He studied chemistry and medicine at the universities of Münster and Freiburg . The diploma in chemistry (1969) and the state examination in medicine (1974) were followed by doctorates in both subjects in 1972 and 1978. Also in 1978 he completed his habilitation at the University of Freiburg with a thesis on the biochemistry of postpartum myometrial involution .

In 1980 he accepted a position at the Institute for Biochemistry at the University of Göttingen . After five years he switched to business and became head of research at the Marburg pharmaceutical manufacturer Behringwerke . From 1986 he was also a member of the company's board of directors. In 1988 he moved to Hoechst AG , the partner in Behringwerke, where he headed the company's worldwide research department. In 1991 he took over the pharmaceuticals division and in 1993 became CEO of Roussel-Uclaf in Paris , a subsidiary of Hoechst AG.

In 1995 he went to Munich and took over the scientific and technical management of the GSF - Research Center for Environment and Health . Here, until his retirement on October 31, 2005, he was responsible for the restructuring of the facility from radiation research to the larger field of environment and health.

In 1997, Afting was a member of the Council for Research, Technology and Innovation set up by German Chancellor Helmut Kohl .
