Ernst August Schnittspahn (born April 17, 1795 in Darmstadt ; † May 22, 1882 there ) was a German painter and draftsman.

Life

Schnittspahn came from a family of court gardeners in Darmstadt. He was born as the second son of Johann August Schnittspahn (1763-1842) in Darmstadt. In contrast to his brothers Gottfried and Friedrich Georg, he did not pursue a career as a gardener, but became an artist.

He visited the pedagogue in Darmstadt. Then he received from Grand Duke Ludewig I of Hesse and from 1818 onwards a quarterly support of 36 guilders, which enabled him to finance training as a painter. In 1822 he was employed as a theater painter at the Darmstadt court theater . Four years later he was appointed court painter .

Schnittspahn created still lifes, portraits and depictions of cities and landscapes. Between 1839 and 1876, around 150 colored drawings of public and private buildings in Darmstadt and the surrounding area were created. A large selection of representations of Darmstadt's buildings can be found today in the Darmstadt Castle Museum and in the Grand Ducal Hessian Porcelain Collection .

He was retired on December 28, 1880 after 58 years of service. He died two years later and was buried in the old cemetery in Darmstadt (grave site: IE 92).
