Ernst Johann Berger (born March 25, 1881 in Opole ; † November 10, 1964 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German lawyer and politician .

Life

Born as the son of a foreman in a cigar factory, Berger studied law at the University of Breslau after attending grammar school in Opole . In 1900 he became a member of the Saxonia fraternity in Wroclaw . After the exams he became a lawyer in Krappitz . In 1912 he entered the higher Prussian administrative service and came to Breslau. In 1915 he became consistorial councilor in the Königsberg church administration, later lecturer or government councilor in the Prussian Ministry of the Interior. In 1921 he played a key role in preparing the referendum in Upper Silesia . In 1922 he became senior councilor and first vice-president of the senior executive committee of the new province of Upper Silesia . He was the chairman of the Upper Silesian Provincial Milk Committee. From 1927 to 1933 he was Lord Mayor of Opole. He was a member of the SPD , which he left in 1933. After the proceedings initiated against him in 1933 on suspicion of corruption - he was given compulsory leave in 1933 - he returned to work as a lawyer. After the Second World War he was expelled . In the Hessian Ministry of the Interior he was Ministerialrat and head of the municipal department. In 1947 he founded the Schlesisches Heimatbund in Wiesbaden , and in 1949 the Landesgruppe Hessen of the Schlesische Landsmannschaft . He was also a co-founder of the state team of the Silesians. In 1952 he became 1st President of the Church Congress of Protestant Silesians in Hanover , was re-elected in 1955 and honorary president at the 3rd Church Congress .
