Ernst Biltz

Ernst Christian August Biltz (born July 26, 1822 in Erfurt ; † January 10, 1903 there ) was a German pharmacist and chemist.

The son of the owner of the Green Pharmacy in Erfurt , Friedrich Heinrich Biltz (1790–1835), attended the council high school there . His acquaintance with Ernst Benary probably came from this time . His father was already a close friend of Johann Bartholomäus Trommsdorff , whose socio-political activities he had actively supported and at whose private teaching institute he also worked as a botany teacher from 1825 to 1828 . He made a name for himself in particular by promoting local opium production .

From 1850 Ernst Biltz was a member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt and honorary chairman of the Thuringian Botanical Association. In 1888 he was promoted to Dr. hc at the University of Marburg . In 1895 he transferred the pharmacy to his son Hugo Biltz.

The layer method in analytical chemistry goes back to Biltz . He also examined the decomposability of chloroforms . In 1878 he wrote the Critical and Practical Notes on the Pharmacopoea Germanica ; He also published numerous magazine articles and other books.

The father Friedrich Heinrich Biltz was born in Olberhau in 1790. He attended the school in Olberhau and the Princely School in Meissen. From 1804 he started apprenticeship in the Löwenapotheke in Dresden under Karl Gottfried Bünger. From 1808 to 1809 he attended the Bergakademie Freiberg and from 1811 to 1812 the University of Vienna. In 1816 he became a citizen of the city of Erfurt and in June of the same year bought the Green Pharmacy there from Heinrich David Bauer for 16,000 thalers. In 1819 he married Christiane Eleonore Schaffhirt (* 1795 † 1853), the daughter of the Dresden paper mill owner Carl August Schaffhirt. Both had five children. The son Ernst Christian August Biltz married Anna Rasch (* 1824) in 1847, with whom he had the three children Helene (* 1848), Hugo (* 1851) and Anna (* 1861).
