Ernst Brotuff (also Ernestus Brotufius ; * 1497 in Merseburg , † probably 1565 there) was a German lawyer and historian .

Life

Brotuff took up his first verifiable position as a clerk at the Benedictine monastery of St. Petri in Merseburg in 1516 . It is unknown where he received his schooling and law degree. In 1525 he was given the position of councilor and lawyer for the monastery. After the abbot Mauritius died there in 1543 and he joined the Reformation , he got a job as Syndicus of the city of Merseburg.

Brotuff was appointed school administrator of the young princely school of Pforta in 1550 by Elector Moritz von Sachsen . He was the third person to hold this office since it was founded. After two years he returned to Merseburg and accepted the office of mayor there. He is believed to have died here in 1565.

Most of Brotuff's works are riddled with mistakes. His genealogy of the House of Anhalt was given historical value through the foreword by Philipp Melanchton .
