Ernst Christoph Bindemann (born on December 22, 1766 in Wustermark in the Mittelmark ; died on November 19, 1845 in Neuendorf , Greifenhagen district ) was a German poet and translator.

Bindemann's parents were the pastor Levin Christoph Bindemann and Johanna Sophia, née Solger, an aunt of the philosopher Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Solger . He studied theology at the University of Halle from 1786 to 1788 and, after working for a long time as a private tutor, found a job as an early preacher and vice rector in Schwedt / Oder in 1793 , where he became rector and deacon in 1794 . From 1801 until his death he was a pastor in Neuendorf in the Greifenhagen district .

Bindemann had already published poems in the 1791 and 1792 volumes of the Berlin Musenalmanac and, together with Friedrich Schmidt von Werneuchen, published the New Berlin Musenalmanac between 1793 and 1797 , to which he made numerous contributions. According to the judgment of his contemporaries, his poems stood out positively compared to the other contributions in the almanac. Nevertheless, his poetry, which is based on the Göttinger Hain and idealizes country life, is not considered to be independent.

Bindemann is important as a translator. In 1793 he submitted the first complete German translation of Theocrit's works , which was distinguished from contemporary translations by the high accuracy and elegance of the metrical reproduction.
