Ernst Graef

Ernst Graef (born July 14, 1909 in Leipzig , † September 3, 1985 in St. Veit an der Glan ) was a German painter , draftsman and graphic artist . He became known as a draftsman for stained glass windows and tapestries .

Life

Graef studied from 1927 to 1930 at the State Academy for Graphic Arts and Book Industry in Leipzig. He lived in Ascona from 1932 to 1934, from 1934 to 1941 in Berlin and from 1941 in St. Veit in Carinthia. Numerous study trips took him to the Mediterranean, Lithuania, Belgium, the Baltic Sea and France.

In the 1930s he designed three large glass windows for the Tempelhof Airport building on behalf of Ernst Sagebiel, depicting the cities of “Paris”, “Rome” and “Stockholm”; the windows for eight other major cities were to follow. He designed a large tapestry for Hermann Göring's Reich Aviation Ministry , which Sofie Mörike made.

Graef's art is derived from the great models of French and German modernism.
