Ernst Hager (philologist)
Ernst Achatius Hermann Hager (born April 19, 1847 in Elstra ; † February 22, 1895 in Manchester ) was a German philologist and Goethe researcher.
Life
Hager was the son of a deacon and attended the Princely School of Sankt Afra in Meissen . He then studied philology in Leipzig . During his studies he became a member of the Afrania country team . In December 1869 Hager was with the thesis "Quaestionum Hyperidearum capita duo" summa cum laude for Dr. phil. PhD . Afterwards he received a call to the University of Manchester , whose first full professor of German language and literature he was. He was one of the authors of the Dictionary of Greek and Roman antiquities published by William Smith .
