Ernst Haider

Ernst Haider (born November 16, 1890 in Munich , † January 27, 1988 in Starnberg ) was a German landscape painter , portrait painter , graphic artist and etcher .

Life

Ernst Haider was the son of the Bavarian landscape painter and art professor Karl Haider with his second wife Ernestine Schwarz and grandson of the hunting draftsman Max Haider . His brother Hubert Haider was also a painter.

From 1910 to 1913 he attended Walter Thors' painting school in Munich ; at the same time he attended lectures at the university in art history . He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , where he attended Angelo Jank's drawing class with Walther Kerschensteiner . His works were exhibited regularly between 1922 and 1931 in the Munich art exhibitions in the Glaspalast .

Haider was a member of the Munich Artists' Cooperative , the oldest association of freelance artists in Bavaria, and of the Association for Original Etching . In 1930 Haider moved to the Stockdorf artists' colony , where he lived until his death. The Nazis occupied it in 1935 with disbarment . After 1945 the artist went on study trips a. a. to Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Italy, England, France and Holland.

In 1947 he was elected to the council of the newly founded Munich Art Association. His works have been performed in elementary school Graefelfing in a collective exhibition of the Literary Society Graefelfing in April 1953 together with sculptures by Ferdinand Filler shown.

A memorial exhibition in honor of the artist was held in Gauting's town hall in 1990.

Artistic work

Haider took the craftsmanship of his artistic activity very seriously; he painted and drew with strict care, taking the perfection of the old masters as his model. In the course of his work he strove more and more to condense and shorten the expression. This is especially true for his portraits, in whose precision and naturalistic expression his drawing skills are clearly expressed. In addition to depicting people, his subjects were various motifs from the great outdoors, especially the mountains, which he liked to paint in the early spring. His mountain views, depicted in bright colors with a certain flatness, reveal his studies of the great Graubünden painters. From the fifties onwards, under the influence of his travels, his style became more open to the trends of the time, but he kept his distance from abstract painting.
