Ernst Helmstädter

Ernst Helmstädter (born April 22, 1924 in Mannheim ; † January 19, 2018 in Münster ) was a German economist .

Helmstadt studied economics and sociology at the University of Heidelberg . After receiving his doctorate in 1956, he worked at the "Federal Office for Commercial Economics", today the Federal Office for Economics and Export Control , in Frankfurt and then at the Bonn Federal Ministry of Finance . In 1961 he went to the University of Bonn as a research assistant to Wilhelm Krelle . There he completed his habilitation in 1965 with a thesis on the capital coefficient and was appointed professor. After a research stay at Harvard University in the USA, he accepted a professorship for economics at the University of Münster in 1969 . At the same time he was appointed director of the institute for industrial research and head of the research center for general and textile market economy. His retirement took place in 1989. He then got involved in the rebuilding of the economics faculty at the Humboldt University in Berlin and he took on visiting professorships at home and abroad.

Scientific achievements

In addition to other works, Helmstadt is the author of the two-volume textbook " Economic Theory ". His research focuses on growth and structure research, distribution theory and empirical economic research. In addition, he dealt with questions of dynamic competition.

From 1983 to 1986 he was chairman of the " Verein für Socialpolitik ". He then headed the Association of European Economic Societies for two years. He became known nationwide through his membership in the “ Expert Council for the Assessment of Overall Economic Development ” from 1983 to 1988, which ended in scandal.

Honors

In 1999 he was made an honorary senator of the University of Münster. In addition to his services in research and teaching as well as political advice, this award also recognized his artistic work. He made numerous pictures and drawings with which he occasionally adorned his scientific publications, and after his retirement he headed the Senate Committee for Art and Culture at the University of Münster for almost ten years.
