Ernst Kuhnert (born August 23, 1862 in Rosenberg , West Prussia , † November 23, 1952 in Göttingen ) was a German librarian and archaeologist .

Life

Ernst Kuhnert studied classical philology, ancient history and archeology at the University of Königsberg , where he was particularly influenced by Gustav Hirschfeld . Hirschfeld led Kuhnert through the university's cast collection to his own specialty, Greek sculpture. He also supervised Kuhnert's dissertation on the installation context of ancient statues. On July 7, 1883, Kuhnert was awarded the highest rating ("egregie") for Dr. phil. PhD . After a semester at Berlin University (winter semester 1883/1884), he passed the teaching examination on July 4th and 5th, 1884.

After completing his studies, Kuhnert first worked for a few months in the antiquities collection of the Royal Museums in Berlin and then completed his probationary year in teaching at the Kneiphöfisches Gymnasium in Königsberg. However, he felt more drawn to academic work, which is why he left school on April 15, 1887 and joined the Royal and University Library in Königsberg as a volunteer . In 1890 he moved to the University Library in Marburg , and in 1895 he returned to Königsberg. In 1905 he was appointed deputy director of the Greifswald University Library , and in 1908 director. In 1921 he became the first director of the Berlin State Library , where he worked as the “right hand man” of the directors-general Fritz Milkau and Hugo Andres Krüß and was appointed secret councilor. On the occasion of his retirement (1928), Kuhnert received a commemorative publication from his former colleagues.

After the Second World War , Kuhnert moved from Berlin to Göttingen, where he died on November 23, 1952 at the age of 90.

Like his career, Kuhnert's scientific work had different focuses. In the years after graduation, he became involved in Greek art. Among other things, he wrote articles for Roscher's Detailed Lexicon of Greek and Roman Mythology and Pauly's Realencyclopedia of Classical Classical Studies (RE). Kuhnert later concentrated his work on the history of books and libraries.
