Ernst M. Backes ( Ernst Michael Backes ; born January 12, 1908 in Oberkirch (Baden), † November 23, 1971 Rummelsberg ) was a bank director and academic painter .

Ernst M. Backes learned the banking trade and became one of the youngest bank directors in Baden at the age of 25. His uncle was Johann Christian Eberle , the founder of giro traffic.

In addition to his commercial activities, Ernst M. Backes studied painting with Wilhelm Sauter at the Karlsruhe Art Academy . While works by Backes can be found in many private collections (especially in Pennsylvania and California) and today also in the Museum Europäische Kunst at Nörvenich Castle , the interest in the visual arts remained only a second mainstay alongside his commercial career.

In 2009 the "Kleine Galerie Fischbach" in Nuremberg showed an exhibition with small sculptures and drawings from the period between 1958 and 1971. Ernst M. Backes' son Lutz Backes became an internationally known caricaturist under the name Bubec and also works as a sculptor and writer.
