Lutz Backes (also Bubec ; born July 16, 1938 in Mannheim ) is a German caricaturist , quick draftsman , writer and sculptor . He lives in Nuremberg .

Life

Born as the son of the bank director and academic painter Ernst M. Backes , Lutz Backes learned the profession of industrial clerk and also studied speech technology and dramaturgy at the Nuremberg Conservatory . He tried his hand at various professions as an editor, bank clerk and auctioneer and was active as an actor, author and director in Nuremberg from 1961 (Neues Theater, Die Hintertreppe). His sequence of scenes until the last drop of anger sparked a theater scandal in 1965 because of the nude appearance of an actress . The result: 132 performances in Nuremberg, Munich and Stuttgart . Backes was already active as a cartoonist at the time. His drawings have been published in various publications in Germany and through a US agency worldwide under the stage name Bubec . From 1977 the Handelsblatt , Düsseldorf, hired him exclusively as a portrait caricaturist. His column Bubecs Zerr-spektiven became a trademark of the Wirtschaftsblatt for over 25 years. In the 1960s he also became the "house cartoonist" of the Munich laughing and shooting society .

In 1967, through the mediation of his school friend Gerd Dassler (son of the entrepreneur Rudolf Dassler ) , Backes designed the Puma AG logo , today one of the most famous brand logos in the world. In 1981 Commerzbank exhibited its Handelsblatt caricatures, which was so successful that the collection was shown as a traveling exhibition at 246 locations for 15 years. Bubec was also able to defend his world record ( Guinness Book of Records ) in high-speed drawing for years . As a show artist, he has appeared in twelve countries and in numerous German, Italian, Turkish and Bulgarian television programs. Over the years Bubec has published a dozen volumes of caricatures. Several times he was awarded the Golden Palms at the humor festival ("Salone dell 'Umorismo") in Sanremo . At times he worked as a guest lecturer at the University of Graz for Innovation and Creativity.

Since the 1990s Backes worked as a cabaret artist again. With the chansonnette Barbara Sewien, he performed several literary and musical cabaret programs. As an author, he has published three books and several tabloid comedies, the first of which, Nasch mich, Ich bin der Honig , ran in Mannheim for three years and was then performed in Switzerland , Italy , the Netherlands and Belgium . From 2002 to 2008 Backes was also a member of the editor-in-chief of EUROjournal pro management . Since 2008 he has mainly been making busts and sculptures, which he has cast in bronze.

As a sculptor, Lutz Backes follows the tradition of the French Jean-Pierre Dantan and Honoré Daumier . These sculptors, graphic artists and caricaturists created significant revolutionary political and socially critical caricatures. With "creative talent and time-critical humor" (according to museum director Joe F. Bodenstein from the Museum of European Art in Nörvenich Castle ) Backes is now modeling caricatured bronze sculptures. Backes learned this art from the Italian caricaturist and sculptor Giorgio Gabellini .
