Ernst Peter Berghaus (born May 23, 1949 in Essen ) is a former triathlon organizer, triathlete , trainer and running sports organizer.

Inspired by the stories of his friend Wolfgang Krämer about Ironman Hawaii 1981, Berghaus hosted the triathlon in Essen on April 26, 1982, the first competition of this kind in Germany over the distances of 1.6 km swimming, 70 km cycling and 12 km running. 48 participants, including six women, attended this event. The winners were the competitive swimmers and siblings Susanne and Ralf Albermann from the starting community in Essen. The swimming took place on a 50 m lane in the indoor swimming pool Rüttenscheid. The changing rooms and the Schillerwiese when changing from cycling to running served as transition areas. The bike course led over three bike laps down to the Baldeneysee . The running was held in the city forest. The winner Albermann started with a Dutch bike. To prevent theft, he locked the bike with a padlock in front of the indoor swimming pool, which he then carried around his neck while cycling. The competition was held for 14 years, most recently over the middle distance. The event was then abandoned as the requirements increased. In the following years some duathlon competitions took place in Essen-Rüttenscheid (see also: History of the triathlon in Germany ).

During his active time, Berghaus took part in many international duathlon and triathlon competitions, such as the Duathlon World Cup 1994 in Hobart, Australia. In 1991 he set his best time on the long distance in the Jümme municipality in a time of 9:23:08 hours.

As a trainer, Berghaus has coached many endurance athletes such as Matthias Graute , Martina Weise, Michael Prüfert and Christian Keller to this day . In 1991 Carina Henning became German champion in the middle distance in triathlon and in 1992 German champion in duathlon. In her youth, the heptathlete and ex-world champion Sabine Braun was trained by him.

Berghaus and his team are currently organizing the New Year's Eve Run, the Allbaulauf and the Baldeney Lake Run in Essen.

Berghaus is now retired. To his time in the profession he has trained as a sanitary plumber in the Stadtwerke Essen in sales for house connections worked. He is divorced and has a daughter.
