Pfundt was the son of the cantor Christian August Pfundt from his marriage to Johanna Christiania Friederika Wieck (* 1767), a sister of Friedrich Wieck . He studied theology and philosophy at the University of Leipzig from 1827 to 1830 and from 1832 to 1835. And also took piano lessons from Friedrich Wieck. In 1837 Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy hired him as a timpanist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra , and he also worked in the city's theater orchestra.

In Leipzig he was one of the closest friends of Robert Schumann , who called him “Cousin Pfund”.

In 1849 he published instructions for playing the timpani, which soon established itself as a standard work. He also invented some improvements for his instrument.
